Primarily a sculptor, Dudek, born in 1952 in Adams, Massachusetts, has always been interested in Modern Architecture, particularly the early works of Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and other mid-century modernists. In 1976, he moved to New York City, where he earned degrees from the School of Visual Arts and Hunter College. He also attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture summer program. He has traveled throughout Europe, has curated many exhibitions, has participated in myriad group shows, and had numerous solos. In Massachusetts, near his 500彩票网手机版官网town, he is a partner in the Bascom Lodge, an Arts-and-Crafts-style lodge at the peak of Mount Greylock, where he is the Director of Cultural Programming. He teaches at SVA and Hunter.
Though a photographer, Sosnowski’s work is abstract and almost painterly. She was born in Detroit, grew up in Poland and the United States, and says that the duality of this experience has strongly influenced her artistic sensibility. “I think about the nature of being in time and place. In my long-term projects, I’m exploring the intricacies of perception and the response to given phenomena as effected by personal experience.” Both tender and poetic, her images have been exhibited at, among other places, in Hillsdale and in Brooklyn. She received an MFA in Photography from Hunter College and is currently an adjunct professor at Hudson County Community College.
At Two Coats of Paint, Dudek will present a wide-ranging selection of new work, including painting, sculpture, photography and prints. Sosnowski will present portions from “Field Guide to Ars Oblivionalis (Preamle: AReturn to Places),” a photography and mixed media project exploring memory, perception and identity. Intended as a mapping out of disparate as well as related fragments of a story, the project is comprised of real, imagined, and supposedly historical moments. Places and elements are reconfigured. The story unfolds as it is being discovered. Selections from three of her other long-term projects will also be on view.
The artists, married since 2005, present two sides of the same coin—one formal, factual, and tongue-in-cheek; the other more elusive and personal, generating cinematic vibrations of longing, nostalgia, and sentimentality. Together their work embodies a profoundly complementary juxtaposition of rootedness and yearning.
